As promised a quick run down of the Zanzibar Serena in Stone Town. Stone town has a number of good hotels, although for the most part they all kind of fall into the category of appealing to a more mass market tourist trade – ie. package tourists who are coming off of group safari’s. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it does mean that most hotels will be swamped by groups and kind of chaotic. I’m trying to be polite here.
The Zanzibar Serena is a bit more low key and a favorite with locals. It’s also a few blocks off the beaten path from the center of Old Town. The rooms are very comfortable and the service is great. Have never had a bad room there, most look out over the water, and in the new building have balcony’s – the old building has more character, the new building has balconies, take your pick, both are great. Swimming pool is kept in great condition and the food is excellent. Basically two things you are really going to crave if you’ve just come off the mainland and been out in the bush.
Walking to the old center of town is a breeze and safe. There is a taxi stand outside, so getting wheels is easy, although you probably won’t need them.
