It’s one of those places you hate talking about because you feel that maybe as a New Yorker you might be giving away one of the best secrets out there, but yes, in a city that is well known for having top notch food, JG Melon is in our book (site) still one of the very best hamburgers you’re going to eat anywhere in the Big Apple. Melon’s is an upper east side institution that’s been around as long as anyone can remember (1972 actually).
The décor is your basic Irish Bar that’s maybe seen better days, rustic in the true sense of the word. The menu is small, you can actually memorize it after having only seen it once. Burgers and cottage fries are the specialty – burgers are not overly loaded, or too big, but the perfect size, patty of excellent beef on a bun, nothing else, although it comes with pickles and onions on the side. The fries are slices camp style, lightly fried, slightly crispy, soft and warm inside. The chili is pretty darn good. Salads are actually made with really fresh ingredients.
Try and find yourself a seat at the bar and soak up the atmosphere.
