I’m going to make a confession right now, I am not a crazy coffee person, I love coffee, but I don’t crave it. I am not a coffee addict. I know good coffee from bad coffee. I know for the most part, most Starbucks coffee and on a wider scale most commercial coffee you’re going to buy in any supermarket is at best okay. I settle for okay coffee, it doesn’t bother me, it not my favorite but I’ll survive. But if there’s one guilty pleasure that I have, actually I have lots of guilty pleasures, but one in particular – every month or two I buy a couple pounds of coffee from Baby’s Coffee at their online shop. I don’t know why, but Baby’s Coffee is by far and away, hands down the best coffee I’ve ever had… and I’ve had the weasel shit coffee from South East Asia.
There’s something about Baby’s that just tastes great. Maybe it’s psychosomatic? Maybe it gives me great memories of all the times I’ve driven down from Miami to spend a week or two in Key West. Maybe it’s conjuring sunshine and happiness from those relaxed days riding my bike, going to the beach, having an early afternoon cocktail, island living at its I couldn’t tell you. I love food, and maybe once I would have considered myself a foodie, but you’ve probably heard about what I think on that topic. I just really like good things and there’s not much of it out there. Baby’s coffee is smooth, it’s flavorful, it’s not too acidic, it’s a little sweet. Between the different brews, you can actually discern different profiles and styles, roasts and more. It is not overwhelming… in short Baby’s has a soul.
There are endless small batch coffee shops out there that are roasting their own beans and doing their own version of coffee, to be frank, for the most part it’s all pretty much the same thing. Baby’s is something special… the world would be a much better place, if Baby’s replaced Starbucks. Trust me on that one. If you’re anywhere near Key West and have a set of wheels, stop by and see for yourself. If that’s not going to happen any time soon, order online. It’s going to be good. I use a French press with tap water. Nothing fancy.
