I’m not a huge donut guy, at least in so much as that I am not a Homer Simpson type who craves over and dreams about donuts. But I like donuts and I love a great donut. I was pretty excited when Krispy Kremes first started popping up everywhere – tiny, delicious, sugary, fresh. That’s got to be going back to the late 1990s. It’s been a long time since I’ve found another donut that I just can’t stay away from. These are in Key West. Like most of my favorite things these days, yes, I’m still on my Key West kick. There’s a small shop that’s right off of Duval on Eaton run every day by whom I believe are a young husband and wife team. These guys are making homemade gourmet fresh donuts… you can watch them come out of the cooker, watch them slather on the goodies and if you’re lucky maybe even get one piping hot, if not they’ll at least be warm. Why are these so great? First they’re light, not too heavy, so you can potentially eat a lot of them. Second, flavors!!! These are not the usual stuffed with some mystery custard, these have icings of various flavors brushed on top, then the likes of candied bacon, or meringue… Key Lime Pie donuts, Pomegranate, Hibiscus, Bourbon Candied Bacon. Coffee is pretty amazing also. There’s a jar of donut holes on the counter, which our dog loves.
Glazed Donuts of Key West.
